  • 1991: United Nicaraguan Opposition (UNO) coalition severely cuts government spending on Sandinista-led social programs including healthcare
  • 1996: Free health care in place by Daniel Ortega

Development of Healthcare in the US

  • 1929: Model for Modern Insurance
    • Baylor Hospital in Dallas began a prepaid program as the first example of health insurance
  • 1965: Introduction of Medicare and Medicaid by President Lyndon Johnson
    • Medicare: Covers hospital and general medical insurance for senior citizens paid for by a Federal employment tax
    • Medicaid: Partially funded program by the Federal government for the poor
  • 1997: Introduction of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) 
    • Established by the federal government to provide health insurance to children in families at or below 200% the federal poverty line
  • 2010: Introduction of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act by President Barack Obama
    • Reforms made to mandate health insurance and eliminate certain practices of insurance companies
    • Major goal is to enable the poor to buy insurance
